The scene

A Record Setter That Bowed

The world's largest plane maker just gave up on one of its own rules. Airbus wanted its office staff back in the building four days a week by September, and then the began. This is the story of how one return-to-office order turned into a quiet rebellion.

The story

A CEO's Push, a Workforce That Pushed Back

Chief Executive Guillaume Faury believed work was the only way to share skills across thousands of new hires. So in June he told staff that home-working, which had been a through the pandemic, was no longer the answer. In Spain, roughly four in ten of the company's 14,000 employees walked out at some point, on and off since July. have long been rare at Airbus, which made the intensity of the unrest a warning its leaders could not ignore.

The debate

What the Research Actually Says

Airbus is far from alone, as executives from finance to retail tighten their office policies. A well-known randomized trial found work matched office productivity while cutting employee by a third. Other analysis found strict return-to-office mandates delivered little financial benefit while driving away senior and diverse talent.

Korea reality

An Office War That Translates

The Airbus story may feel distant, but the same tug-of-war plays out in Korean offices over attendance, commutes, and meeting culture. Whether companies trust recorded hours or the results people deliver is becoming the quiet question behind every attendance rule.

What you can do

Read the Bargain Hiding in a Policy

Next time your company changes an office rule, ask one direct question: what problem is this actually solving? Because when workers can tell a real problem from a control habit, they stop being pushed around and start negotiating like equals.
